About Twin Tip Skis
Twin tips skis are pretty much like regular alpine skis, except with a kicked up tail as well as the usual kicked up tip, duh!. The name comes from the curved tip and tail and the whole point of twin-tip skis is to make it possible to take off and land backward (fakey) over jumps and to ski backwards down the hill.
Orginally designed for so called new school skiing, such as in terrain parks and half pipes, twin tip skis have become super popular for all kinds of skiing all over the mountain. You can get powder skis, mid fats, all-mountain skis, and even telemark skis with twin tips these days.
The very first twintip ski made was the Olin Mark IV Comp way back in 1974, but it was clearly ahead of its time as the whole freestyle/freeskiing movement had not progressed as far as it has today so the twin tip ski was not as versatile. The first ski company to really sell a twin tip ski was Salomon, with the now classic 1080 ski in 1995. The rise of twin tip skis and the new school freeskiing movement they inspired helped give rise to cool independent ski companies like Armada and 4FRNT, which really specialize in building twin tip skis for freeride and freestyle skiers around the world.
