About Oakley
Oakley was founded in 1975 in California and the first product they manufactured was their molded handlebar grip for moto-cross bikes. They soon after started producing similar BMX grips which is when I first became aware of them...they were sooo cool!
But it is fair to say that while they have gone on to produce a huge range of different products they are most well known for their sunglasses. Oakley sunglasses are preferred by action sports enthusiasts and outdoors types.
Their first foray into optics was the O-frame moto-cross goggle they launched in 1980. This found some success, but it was the O-frame sunglasses they subsequently launched that really took off, and then they had a huge hit with their growing line of street fashion sunglasses, principally the Frogskin model. Who did not have a pair of Frogskins back in the early nineties!
Oakley sun glasses are still their primary focus, but as part of the European luxury good group, Luxottica, they now produce a range of active and fashion wise street gear.
