Snowboards

I remember years ago I arrived in Whistler at the start of the season with this pig of a board, a 165 HOT ‘big mountain’ board. It weighed a ton and was just not right for me. Ruined the first few weeks of the season for me until I coughed up and bought a new board.

Some of the most important things to consider when buying a snowboard are the weight, height, shoe size, and the type of ride you’ll be doing. Let us tackle each of these things one by one, for you to have all details listed out.

Weight – If you’re relatively light, look for a board that has a softer flex. On the other hand, if you’re on the heavier side, you must look for a board that has a stiffer flex. Simply: if you’re light, get a shorter board; and if you’re heavy, get a longer one.

Height – It would be better if there was only one size of snowboard for everyone, but alas, it does not work that way. When deciding on what to buy, you must pick the one that suits your height (or 90% of it).

One of the ways in which you could see if the snowboard length is right for you is this: stand upright and see if the board reaches you nose or eyebrow. If it does, the size is right for you.

If you’re just starting out, the shorter snowboards will be more apt for you, because these kinds of boards will allow you to have easy maneuvers and allow you to easily practice some tricks. Longer snowboards, on the other hand, are usually used for freeriding—these types of snowboards will allow you to have better handling in terms of speed.

Shoe Size – You foot length should approximately match the width of the board, so the bigger your feet, the wider your board should be. The one that you must look for is a board that is not too wide.

Riding Style – You must also know what kind of ride you’ll be doing, as there is no fixed board style for all types of rides. Two of the styles that you’ll come across are: Freestyle (advisable for tricks), and the Freeride / All Mountain (one of the most famous ones, as it’s great for cruising, obstacles, and tricks).
