Buying Cross Country Skis
Choosing what to buy in the way of cross country skis is an important decision. Most of us will use the same pair of skis for a few seasons at least, so you want to make sure you buy something that suits you as a skier and is going to last. Here are a few tips on buying cross country skis:
- First understand what kind of cross country skier you are...and be honest. Are you a beginner (just starting out), intermediate (a few days or weeks a year), or advanced (lots of days every year, really good at skiing).
- Next you need to understand how the types of cross country skis are broken down...yes, there are a few different kinds of cross country ski and they are not all created equal. Are you after Nordic skis, which is probably what most people think of when they consider cross country skiing, or are you after Skate skis which are designed with racing in mind, or perhaps a back country touring ski. These all fall under the broad category of cross country skis.
- What kind of budget do you have. Fair to say that there is a large range of price points for cross country skis, and these are partly tied to brand names, but probably more so materials used in construction, eg. Are you looking at traditional wood and fibreglass construction, or something more advanced with carbon fibre which is what you might find in an expensive race ski.
A good idea is probably to find someone who can help you answer all these questions with reference to your own requirements. Once you have decided what specific cross country ski you are after come back here and check out our listings...we have pretty much all the major manufacturers listed and the prices are very hard to beat.
