About Burton
Burton Snowboards was started by Jake Burton back in 1977. Although Burton now owns patents related to snowboard manufacture they certainly did not invent snowboarding. Just who did is entirely debatable, but it is generally recognized that Sherman Poppens Snurfer was the first commercially available snowboard like equipment. The Snurfer was certainly the first time Jake Burton and many of the other early snowboard pioneers tried sliding sideways on snow.
Fast forward to the early 1980s and snowboarding was developing a real following despite being literally outlawed on many commercial ski fields because of perceived danger. This fuelled the underground image of the sport making it cool, and so ensuring it would become popular with the kids. By 1985 the sport had its own magazine, Absolutely Radical, and by 1994 the Wall Street Journal proclaimed snowboarding as the fastest growing winter sport anywhere.
Over this time there were many entrepreneurial snowboarding companies popping up, but Burton has been the single most successful. Perhaps more than any other pioneer Jake Burton saw the mainstream potential of the market and has steered the company very consistently, some would say conservatively. Whatever, Burton Snowboards is today the leading snowboard manufacturer in the world, larger even than the publically traded Ride company.
One of the companies keys to success has been their dedication to promoting the sport at the grass roots level with endeavours as their Learn to Ride program, and their generous and expansive sponsorship of professional snowboard athletes such as Shawn White, Jeremy Jones and Victoria Jealouse.
