When buying new ski bindings there are a couple of things to consider. First, you need to be honest about your skiing ability. Are you a beginner, intermediate (a few days a year), or advanced/expert (lots of skiing). Ski binding manufacturers all have a range of ski binding options which will reflect different levels of technology, performance and price.
I would always suggest buying the best bindings you can afford, but assuming price is a consideration then you can filter your search by assessing which part of the range to buy in based on your skier level. One of the key performance factors will be the DIN range on the binding...the higher the range, typically the higher the performance of the binding. The DIN range reflects how much pressure is required to pop the ski boot out of the binding, so a binding with a low range of DIN settings is typically designed for a novice skier, while expert skiers will use bindings that can be cranked up to a higher DIN setting.
The most popular ski bindings are made by the following manufacturers:
Marker
Marker ski bindings are highly sort after and used by many of the world best known skiers, people like Shane McConkey and Glen Plake. Marker ski bindings are available for ski racers, freestyle and freeride skiers, as well as recreational skiers looking for top performance.
Look
Look ski bindings are enormously popular particularly in the freestyle skiing scene. They earned a special place in freestylers hearts with their innovative pivot sytem. This binding has updated in the in 2008 range as the PX series.
Salomon
Salomon also make some kick ass ski bindings with the flagship binding being the excellent STH16. They actually have an incredibly broad range with 12 models in all including some Salomon ski bindings made especially for women and kids. If you ski Salomon skis then their bindings would be a natural choice.
Rossignol
Rossignol ski bindings are actually rebranded Look bindings. Nothing wrong with that though because they really are pretty amazing.
