How to get under my skin

29 December 2005 | 5 Comments

Document in annoying detail something completely obvious and then declare it like you’ve just discovered the secret to perpetual motion.

I’m sure Steve Rubel is a decent guy, but he does have a habit of coming up with stuff like this. Dude, you’ve just described Google book search, so what.

News syndication service for sale

28 December 2005 | 1 Comment

Probably a bad time of year for this with half the internet on holiday, but future announcements will make it clear why I am posting this now…

fr logo News syndication service for saleI am looking to sell Feedroll.com. If you are interested in buying a popular news syndication service drop me an email, or a comment here, and I’ll provide some more detail about the site/traffic/income etc.

There’s more to this sale than I want to post here, suffice to say now that there is a revenue stream, news syndication services are very popular, and given more resources (more servers) Feedroll could grow much bigger. If you’re genuinely interested please get in touch and let me know why you’re interested. This is important because I will not sell to just anyone.

cheap.as

A while back TechCrunch published a post, Companies I’d like to Profile (but don’t exist), and number 4 was Tailored Local Offers (via RSS). There were a few goodies, but this was the one that tweaked my interest because I have thought about this a number of times myself…

I’d like to be able to subscribe to a feed which delivered special offers/coupons/discounts from businesses in my area, defined by my choice of area (zip) code (or multiple area codes, maybe where I live and where I work). Of course I should also be able to subscribe by email, and probably define categories which were of interest. Offers would show up in my reader with a brief description and a link to the page where I can print off the coupon (if a printed copy is required).

From a merchant point of view it would enable users to select which area codes their offer went to (maybe by selecting an area from a map), and the cost would be based on some forumla of area codes and subscriber numbers, so incenting merchants to keep their offers tightly focussed. The system would also enable merchants to tie offers into their POS system by entering product codes for each offer which would be displayed on the coupons as bar codes. There are a number of online coupon places and I am always surpised not to have seen anyone do this already…it’s not like producing bar codes is hard.

Simple stuff, but I am not aware of anyone who is doing this in a good way already…anyone? I even thought of a cool domain name, cheap.as, although I am not sure anyone outside Australia/NZ would be familiar with the common use of the phrase “cheap as!”, which is quite different to “cheap ass!”, but you know, that might work too :)

The Chronic of Narnia Rap

18 December 2005 | 0 Comments

Now this just is just sheer brilliance, The Chronic of Narnia Rap (via Waxy)…reminds me how clever SNL can be. We don’t get SNL or the Dailyshow downunder :(

Note to self: have me a serious bittorrent session when I get a moment.

The Long Tail: Cheating Google 101…or not

18 December 2005 | 0 Comments

I really don’t get this, The Long Tail: Cheating Google 101. The dude is not cheating Google. It is a PPC model so if he don’t get no clicks, Google don’t get paid…that’s the whole idea. He might be getting some impressions, but so what… the the ‘branding value’ of this has to be next to nought as he’s not being associated with any keywords or searches that are relevant…if he was then he’d be getting clicks.

Feeding the Xoogler habit

Xooglers got slashdotted the other day so now there are over 400 subscribers to the serialized RSS feed I set up. Coolio.

If you want your own serialized RSS feed talk to me :)

Feedburner’s FeedFlare

13 December 2005 | 0 Comments

Next to the stats tracking (obviously), I reckon FeedFlare is the most significant feature yet rolled out by Feedburner…I like where they’re going with this.

Cute, damn cute.

Heh…took him a while to get the hang of this walking business, but Flynn’s all over the place now.

At ease readers!

If you’ve tried to comment on my blog recently you would probably have been quite frustrated by the mostly unsolvable captcha.

It had the desired effect of stemming the flow of spammers, but also had two unintended consequences, namely to piss off legit commenters, and as a result make me feel lonely and unloved.

So I’ve upgraded to the latest version of Spam Karma which ought to be a lot more friendly for legit commenters, while still solving the spam problem. I have used an earlier version of Spam Karma before, and while it worked I also found it a bit tedious moderating so much. I understand now though that it is much more sophisticated and works wonderfully on some very highly traffic’d sites, so it ought to meet my humbler needs.

Let me know if you have any trouble with it.

Email probs?

Oh crap…just got a heads up that email is bouncing from my regular email account.

If you’re feeling ignored or unloved this might be why…please forgive me and try again at charles.coxhead at gmail dot dom. That should work.
